Why we're building the missing interface for mortgage origination
January 3, 2026 by Athan Zhang

We're Copperlane, and we're building AI-native software for mortgage origination. This is the first post on our blog, where we'll share what we're working on, what we're learning, and why we think the mortgage industry is ready for a fundamentally better workflow.
The Problem We Set Out to Solve
Buying a home is the biggest financial decision most people will ever make. Yet the process of getting a mortgage, the paperwork, the back-and-forth, the waiting, feels like it was designed to be as stressful as possible.
Borrowers submit the same documents multiple times. Loan officers spend their days chasing paperwork instead of advising clients. Everyone involved knows the process is broken, but the tools available haven't kept up with what's possible.
Enter Copperlane
Copperlane is the missing interface between borrowers and loan officers. We use AI to handle the coordination work that slows everything down:
- Guided borrower intake: dynamic conversations instead of static forms
- Intelligent document collection: context-aware requests with automatic validation
- Real-time verification: catch issues before they become underwriting conditions
- Clean handoffs: structured, traceable data that loan officers can act on immediately
We're not replacing loan officers. We're giving them back the time to do what they do best: advise, guide, and close.
What's Next
Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about our approach to mortgage technology, the problems we're tackling, and the thinking behind our product decisions. If you're a lender curious about what AI-native origination looks like, we'd love to talk.
